Happy Campers...

In May, Daniel and I decided to end our homeschool year by taking a road trip to the mountains. It was difficult to leave a piece of my heart at home in Austin all week, but so worth it to pour love and special attention into Kason and Zoe who sacrifice so much by having a special needs brother. We had an absolute blast together!!
On the way to Red River, we decided on a layover to see the cousins in Lubbock...
On the road, we squeezed in a pinch of school...
and even made a pit stop for a history lesson...
Of course nothing feels better than when you finally arrive and set up camp!
We were in Red River for a full 3 days...hiking, fishing, relaxing, eating smores, playing yatzee every night, and making memories!
One morning Daniel decided to take us off roading and let's just say the kids thought they were going to die...haha! We may have scarred them just a little, but at least they will have a fun story to tell when they are older :).
The pictures don't do justice for the steep inclines we were really going up. The road continued to narrow with the sides dropping off on one side, which really got the kids worked up. We finally stopped when it became unsafe for a picnic.
Daniel had to calm the kids down! I ended up hiking back down the road with the kids while Daniel got himself out :).
We went fishing a couple times while there, but didn't have much luck. At least the scenery was gorgeous!
On our big day hike, Daniel had a goal of going to this beautiful lake nestled into the mountains. Both of us had been backpacking there before, so we were excited to show the kids. Kason and Zoe were AMAZING...they hiked 10 miles in the mountains that day!! They went over and under fallen trees, crossed over rivers & creeks, went through 3 scree fields, and several snow slopes. The snow passes got to be too steep, so we had to turn back...but wow! Watching their endurance and perseverance was pretty incredible. Daniel and I were beaming with pride knowing we had little backpackers with us!

On our final full day, we drove over to Taos and enjoyed us a scrumptious breakfast...
We piddled around town wondering through shops before heading to the Rio Grande Gorge which was incredible to see in person...
Our final activity that day was what I was looking forward to the most...white water rafting!! Kason was all jazzed up being the adrenaline junky he is, but Zoe was a little scared.

Zoe ended up sitting on the bottom of the boat next to the guide's feet and just held on. She was brave and never cried, but she was definitely out of her element. Kason on the other hand is already asking when he can go down harder rapids :)!
This outdoor, mountain loving family was fortunate to spend an incredible week together cherishing God's beauty. We were more than ready to love our sweet Max up when we got back, but still enjoyed being able to experience a little adventure together!
