Farm School...

This spring, the kids and I had the opportunity to go to an 8 week Farm School Homeschool Co-op. It was hands down one of the most fun things we did all year!! We all fell in love with farm life, so much so that we decided to bring a little country life to our backyard with a mini-urban homestead. I think I might have learned as much if not more than my kiddos!

Week 1 on the farm we learned the basics of the farm, gardening, and food chains...we also met the animals.
By week 2, we learned that mornings on the farm are our favorite! Today we learned about soil food webs, composting, decomposers, how poop fertilizes soil, but the favorite was...worms!
At the end of school today, the kids were able to do an art project depicting life on the farm.
Week 3 on the farm we learned how to heal soil, how plants grow, and a new BIG vocabulary word...propagation (growing a plant without using a seed). Kason is loving getting his hands dirty while Zoe just wants to cuddle with the animals all day :).
Week 4 on the farm we learned about life as a farmer! We learned how to feed and take care of chickens, how to milk goats & trim their nails, Kason put together wheelbarrows, and we continued our work in the garden.
Week 5 on the farm was all about pollinators! We made seed bombs (to grow wild flowers for pollen), learned all about bees and their hive, even tasted fresh honey and honey comb, learned about life cycles, and Kason even got to try on the protective suit & help get the hives ready for this season. Productive and educational day!
We sadly missed week 6 on the farm. The kids were so exhausted, I couldn't get them out of bed in time, ha! We picked right up the following week. Week 7 on the farm was all about homesteading! We got into the kitchen to learn about cooking from the land and then had a lesson on how to turn wool into yarn. Every kid needs a little homesteading in their lives. It’s so fun seeing all the practical, real life skills our kids learn when we expose them to creating from scratch!
Week 8 on the farm was sadly our last day. We played trivia review games and the kids did presentations. Kason spoke about Factory Chicken Farming vs. Free Range Chicken Farming. He would LOVE to share his passion with you about all that he has learned...so make sure to stop him next time you see him.
The kids and I can’t say enough positive words about the incredible hands-on learning experience we had. We also can’t rave enough about Farmer Amy and what an awesome teacher she is!! We will greatly miss our weekly day at The Hills of Milk and Honey: An Educational Farm.
