I had all these incredible Christmas ideas for homeschool this month, but alas none of them happened. Between Disney and Christmas I was a hot mess, haha! We did minimal school, some days focusing just on reading and math and I unfortunately wasn't able to get a lot of hands on learning in which was sad. Thankfully my sweeties just roll with the punches and don't care too much. Zoe worked a lot on her scissor cutting skills this month...
while digging into as much sensory play as she could find. I did manage to get a few creative things squeezed in for Kason...
like the couple days our school focused on the theme of snowflakes.
While we didn't get to all my planned activities, we did spend a lot of time reading about and watching videos on how other children from a variety of cultures celebrate Christmas. Cultures around the world has been our focus for Social Studies this year, so we had a great time locating their homes on a map while reading about their customs. I've mentioned before I wasn't sure how this homeschool gig would pan out for the year and how my kids would respond, but I've been overwhelmed with how flexible they have been. It has made my life easier trying to balance therapy and dr. visits while homeschooling. As mentioned in my earlier post, we spent an entire day at the hospital with Max and these two...
did a phenomenal job doing their work while in a hospital waiting room and exam room! They didn't once balk or get upset, they just did their thing. I'm so thankful for the way God created them to be gracious to our situation. Unrelated to school, but totally what's happening in our household, is our oldest exploring boundaries as to what is appropriate language in our home. Oh, he knows the rules...but he still has to exercise his freedom. This is one of my favorite consequences for him because he hates writing, haha! This is truly torture for him, but so good for him to be reminded of the power of our language.
On a good note for Kason, he went to this super cool homeschool day at the Science Mill. He was able to take apart several toys to see how they work, create a new toy using the parts, film a commercial, and talk about a business plan for selling his product.
It was right up his ally and he loved having an excuse to take things apart! After we picked him up, he took Zoe around the museum to show her everything...
it's fun to see him teach her :). What I've come to love about homeschool is that it doesn't matter if you get a lot of formal education done...there are so many rich learning experiences still happening in unique ways.
