A Feast of Fall Fun...

This month, I decided to integrate mommy school activities with fall fun. I wanted to work on the 5 senses with Zoe so in the day while big brother was gone, we went sensory exploring! We sang Head, Shoulders, Knees, & Toes to review our body parts...then we talked about what function each body part has. Of course seeing was the easiest because we were able to review colors and talk about how things look different throughout all of our activities. Both Zoe and Max had fun feeling a variety of textures this month...
Hearing was pretty hilarious when I gave her a sheet of bubble wrap...
you can see she thought that was pretty cool! We also spent time outside listening for different sounds and tried to figure out what each one was. I even took Zoe and Max on a field trip to the Lakeshore Education Store...
There were so many "toys" set up in the store that these two had a blast! We got to touch so many different textures like kinetic sand...
We even explored a sensory box of snow with animals that live in a colder habitats!
Zoe especially loved hearing herself sing in a microphone...she felt like a star :). As for smelling, well during our normal grocery shopping trip I would take a detour through the candle section and we had fun sniffing our way down the aisle...
I also added in a few "fall" scents during our Thanksgiving activities with all three. We made pumpkin pie playdough...
that smelt heavenly! Each were given a pie plate, playdough, and a pie server...
and they created a "delicious" dish! I tried my hand at making scented finger paints to paint pinecones (to add in a rougher texture)...
and let's just say that was a Pinterest fail!
It ended up being way too thick and goopy, but the kids still had fun smelling fall spices and smearing the goop around. I mean, who doesn't like to get a little dirty!
Of course Max wasn't too sure :)...
One of my favorite activities was when the kids had free reign to be creative when making their "leaf people"...
I glued the leaves down where they wanted them and they let loose coming up with their own characters. This month we got in the kitchen to whip up a batch of acorns. If you know Kason well, this kid is obsessed with squirrels...he thinks they are so cool.
So he was geeked up to make acorns together. Plus it helps when we are talking about the 5 senses and they get to explore taste through chocolate kisses, cookies, pretzels, and frosting...
They turned out precious and the kids loved gobbling them up for a snack in the afternoon...
The day before we headed out for Thanksgiving break, the kids and I spent the morning reading about the first Thanksgiving. We learned about the Pilgrims and Native Americans, the hardships they endured, how they helped each other, and the first feast. I had a few words that went along with the story and the kids had to spell out the words using alphabet cereal...
of course we were lucky if Zoe actually put any on the page rather than eating them all!
We sang "I'm a little Pilgrim" and created the Mayflower together...
at one point I had all three pilgrims in the Mayflower floating through our living room ocean! We also sang "I'm a little Indian" and talked about the different ways the Pilgrims and Native Americans hunted. For lunch the little turkeys got to gobble their very own!
My favorite part of the day was discussing the real meaning of Thanksgiving...
We talked about all of our blessings. It took Kason a solid 5 minutes to get passed listing every way that he is thankful for daddy and how much he plays with him :). The sweetest moment was when he said he was thankful for Zoe always sharing her toys with him. I'm beyond thankful for the blessing of these three little turkeys and the joy they bring to our home!
